Marblehead International Class Racing Events
The Marblehead International One Design Class participates annually
in many local, regional and international events. In addition to the local
events described below, the fleet is invited to send at least one participant
to the World Championship, the
North American Invitational,
the Nantucket Invitational,
and Bermuda International Raceweek.
MRA Summer Championship
The Marblehead
Racing Association (MRA), for the 2005 season, offers two racing series over the course
of the summer. The MRA First Series includes starts on the first Saturday of June
and the five Saturdays that follow (thru July 9th this year). The MRA
Second series includes 12 scheduled races from July 16th through September 3rd.
not including July 30th (Marblehead Race Week).
Prizes are awarded for the best finishing teams in each of the series.
The MRA Summer Championship Prizes are awarded to the teams with the lowest
combined scores from the two series.
Marblehead Race Week
With more than 100 years of history, Marblehead Race Week is one of
the oldest and most prestigious one-design regattas in North America.
The International Class has participated in Marblehead Race Week continuously
since 1938. The four-day, seven-race series is traditionally sailed at
the end of July, always concluding on the final Sunday of the month. In
addition to the Race Week Prizes, the International Class recognizes the
Race Week winner with a handsome perpetual trophy.
The Labor Day Regatta
One of the most popular events of the summer, the Labor Day Regatta
is sailed on the Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day Weekend. This end-of-summer
event provides teams with one final opportunity to compete for a prize.
The 2-day/five-race/no-throwout format emphasizes consistency. The regatta
is often sailed in the first of fall's blustery breezes, making the event
a fitting conclusion to the summer's racing.
Marblehead Qualifiers
To determine representatives for interfleet regattas, the Marblehead
fleet organizes its summer racing into several qualifiers. The order of
finish in any given qualifier is used to determine the order of preference
for all invitations being contested. In some cases, invitations to several
events are distributed through a single qualifier, at the end of the qualifier,
the winning teams are given the opportunity to select one of the available
invitations. Please see this seasons throwout schedule for more details.
Marblehead First Qualifier
The First Qualifier begins on the first saturday of June and ends at the conclusion
of Marblehead Race Week. It will be used to determine our fleet's single
representative at the 2005 IOD North Americans here in Marblehead (September
2005).
Marblehead Second Qualifier
The Second Qualifier begins with the first race of Marblehead Race Week,
includes all August Championship races, the Labor Day Regatta. It will be used to determine the fleet's
representative at the 2006 Bermuda International Race Week, and the Marblehead
representative at next summer's Nantucket Invitational.
